SMO is a small tool to grab metadata from two websites and store them in the format needed for Sam's Video Browser for Vista MCE.

Sam's tool uses the folder names for sorting - You should use only the movies original title (and maybe the year as in my examples). SMO also uses this foldername to do it's inital queries (strips everything from the last ")" so you can keep additional info like "!TVrip" after the year).

Starting with version 0.2.1, SMO no longer requires you to follow the jobs according to the old "steps". You can just use the two buttons to start searching for a cover and the metadata and when everything is showing correctly in the interface, the "Save" button does the rest. I have also added some Info to the statusstrip that shows information about the last action and the overall amount of data it has collected:

Here's a short example of how you can get the data for a movie like "Sin City", located at d:\movies\all\Sin City (2005):

  1. Right-click on the movie folder and select "salami's movie organizer". SMO will start and set the "Year" field if you have provided it in the folder name. This is not necessary, the field will get filled from the meta-search.
  2. First, we are going to grab a poster for the movie. Choose the provider you want (default is "IMP", you can set the default provider through the settings) and press "Launch cover search". Depending on the provider, you will have to use the internal browser to navigate to a page that shows the poster. Unfortunately IMP doesn't have a good search engine, so you will have to browse through the google results (although the first one is usually the correct one). Once a poster is visible in the browser, SMO will start to download it in the background and display it in the preview panel:

  3. In the next step, we'll grab the metadata from your preferred source. The default is IMDB, but this can be set through the config. To start the search, just press the button "Launch metadata search" to fire up the internal browser. Depending on the provider and the amount of results, you might have to navigate to the proper detail page manually. As soon as it shows in the browser, the data fields should get populated with the data SMO has extracted from the website:

If you need to make any adjustments, you can directly edit most of the fields. If you're happy with the collected data, press "Save movie data".

Advanced tips:

  • If you want to use moviemeter.nl as source for both posters and metadata, just set both providers to "mm.nl" and use "Launch metadata search", SMO will grab the cover directly out of the meta-search.
  • You can "lock" the data-fields from getting updated by SMO. This is helpful if you want to combine data from two meta-sources. To do that simply double-click on the affected field and it will get grayed-out. If you switch to a different provider and start a new search, SMO will not overwrite this field with the data from the second search.

Extra features:

  • Sam's Movie Browser currently doesn't offer a way to change the default location (your profile's "My Video" folder) it looks for the movies. If you don't want to use links you can set the My Movies folder through SMO:
  • SMO can create NTFS junctios to your movie folder for each genre it belongs to. This is experimental and described in this seperate guide.
